Will Palmer samples F4 machinery

Less than a week after racing at Snetterton in the Ginetta Junior Championship, taking poles and a podium, Will was back to Snetterton on Friday the 9th August to have his first proper single-seater experience.

He would be driving the new for 2013 BRDC Formula 4 car, which features slicks and wings, and is very different to the Ginetta G40 that Will is used to. Its 2.0 litre Duratec engine produces 185bhp, and the car also features a six-speed paddleshift transmission, very different to the manual sequential gearbox found in the Ginetta.

Will would be driving with Chris Dittman Racing, a team with much experience and success. The weather was far from helpful, with the track very wet with standing water in many places.

The whole of the morning ended up being wet, but the wet running was still useful for Will to get used to the Formula 4 car, as even in the wet conditions, Will's best lap was fifteen seconds faster than his pole time in Ginetta Juniors the weekend before!

Fortunately, it dried up in the afternoon, and Will was finally able to feel the full grip of the car on slick tyres, posting some very respectable times for his first test in it. Throughout the whole day, Will completed a total of 106 laps of the long Snetterton 300 circuit, leaving him fully up to speed with the car.

"Today was an amazing experience, the amount of grip feels incredible, and the braking distances feel ridiculously small! I'm very pleased with the pace I got down to in the dry, and I am also very happy with the team, CDR, who I found very motivated and helpful. I will now switch my focus back to Ginettas for the rest of the season, though I am looking at doing the Formula 4 Winter series at the end of the year."
