Palmer finishes fifth overall after a fantastic recovery drive

Will Palmer, who won the first race of the weekend from pole position, had a more difficult start to the second day of racing at Brands Hatch.

Qualifying was held in very difficult conditions with overnight rain leading to a damp track. Palmer, like most others, went out on slicks and was near to the pace throughout the session. However, the track was getting much faster each lap, and traffic as well as small errors meant Will was not able to put in a lap when it mattered most, meaning he would have to start race one from eighth on the grid.

Race one was very frustrating for Palmer, who damaged his front wing on the first lap at Druids following contact with Gosia Rdest, and therefore had to drive with very little grip through the high speed corners.

Hoping to be able to set fastest lap of the race, which determines the grid for race two, Will pitted for a new front wing, however rain ended any hopes of improving, which meant he finished tenth, with the tenth fastest lap as well after having to drive with the damaged front wing.

Race two was a very different affair. A very aggressive first few corners saw Palmer move into seventh place after passing a car at each of the first three corners. He then saw an opportunity to pass Matty Graham at Clearways and seized it to take sixth place.

Will then reeled in Falco Wauer with a series of quick laps before lunging past him at Paddock with just over ten laps to go. He then chased after Jake Cook, who had managed to build a gap while those behind him fought over position, finishing within a second of him in fifth place, which secured Palmer fifth place overall in the BRDC Formula 4 Winter Series.

"Today was very difficult after being caught out by the weather and suffering front wing damage in race one; the second race once again showed our potential however after making up five places to finish fifth with very strong pace. Overall, I'm really pleased with how the Winter Series has gone for me, especially after taking a pole and a win yesterday, and I can't wait until 2014!"
