Palmer claims Winter Championship title with victory

Will Palmer is the 2014 BRDC F4 Winter Champion, after securing victory in the final race of the series at Brands Hatch this afternoon.

Palmer started from pole, but Connor Jupp alongside made the best start to lead on the run down to Paddock Hill Bend. Further back there was drama as di Mauro and Fonseca were caught up at the first turn, with Fonseca retiring and Palmer having to take avoiding action.

Jupp pulled out a strong lead, but a spin at Graham Hill Bend on lap 13 while over six seconds in the lead ended his race, and allowed Palmer into the lead, who had recovered from his opening lap dramas to pass Albert and then di Mauro.

The safety car was deployed and pitted on lap 16. Palmer then marched into the lead, taking the flag by 6.2 seconds from Albert, who capitalised on a last lap mistake from di Mauro to claim second place, with the Brazilian third.

Palmer took the championship with 239 points, 34 clear of di Mauro. For winning the championship, Palmer receives free entry to the main BRDC F4 season next year.

Palmer commented: "It feels great to secure the Winter Championship. It's been a very tricky weekend, especially at the start but the team have done really well to come back and help me secure the title.

"There was a lot of pressure heading into the weekend because even though I'd won the first three races at Snetterton, Gaetano had finished second each time and then won the last race. He also looked strong in the wet and I knew that would play a factor at Brands Hatch. Yesterday was difficult, but we came back from it well, so a big thanks to the team because they've done an excellent job.

"It's been a fantastic battle and it feels like in half the races I've been going wheel-to-wheel with Gaetano and the racing has been very fair. We go into next year looking very strong."
