Second Silverstone victory helps Palmer to championship lead

Will Palmer took a second lights-to-flag victory at Silverstone last weekend (30/31 May) as he took the spoils in the final race of the meeting. The 18-year-old had earlier taken a strong fourth position in race two and leaves the Northamptonshire venue 12 points clear at the top of the overall Duo BRDC Formula 4 standings.

It was a damp start to the day as the morning's race was on a slippery surface due to overnight and early morning rain. Starting from eighth, Will initially had a fight with Ecurie Ecosse Young Driver Ciaran Haggerty but he was able to get past him in the early stages and joined the scrap for the top-five.

His next adversary was the Chris Dittmann Racing car of Tom Jackson and Will overtook him with relative ease to move into fifth. Ahead, the Sean Walkinshaw Racing car of Jordan Albert outbraked himself as he attempted to overtake second-placed man Hernan Fallas and skated off the circuit. He lost a number of positions and that promoted Will to fourth before Omar Ismail was overtaken to put the Southwater ace in third.

The Lanan Racing car of Rodrigo Fonseca was charging through the field and passed Palmer on his way to victory. Tom Jackson meanwhile had found some more pace as Will's tyres went off and the Maidstone-based racer took fourth. Heading into the final lap, Will was fighting Hernan Fallas and the Argentine racer spun out of Club Corner, handing fourth position to Will where he would finish at the end of the race.

Due to his fastest lap across the first two races, set in dry conditions in the opening race, Will was on pole position for the final encounter of the weekend. As the lights went out, he made a strong start and comfortably led into Copse ahead of Jordan Albert and Ciaran Haggerty.

After the first lap, Will had opened up a clear advantage of 1.923s as the rest of the field squabbled behind. His HHC Motorsport team-mate Harri Newey eventually made it into second, having started fourth, but Will was already over five seconds clear by the midpoint of the race. Will continued to extend his advantage, setting a number of fastest laps and as he headed onto the final tour, was 8.292s clear of Newey with Rodrigo Fonseca taking the final podium spot in third.

Will leads the championship standings on 193 points, 12 points ahead of Lanan Racing's Rodrigo Fonseca and 31 points clear of Manxman Chris Mealin in third.
