Will qualifies 16th for Eurocup opener at Motorland Aragon

R-ace GP ART Junior Team driver Will Palmer will line up 16th for the opening race of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 season at Motorland Aragon in Spain, and 11th for race two.

In a divided qualifying format, which saw the field take to the track in two separate groups, Will posted the eighth fastest time in Group A with a 1m56.504s lap. His second quickest time, which sets the grid for race two, was a 1m56.513s which put him 6th overall in his group and 12th overall. Max Defourny set the overall fastest time from Group B to claim pole position with that giving precedence to Group B in row order.

As his 15-minutes of qualifying track time got underway, Will took to the track along with 11 other runners and quickly set about warming up his tyres. His first competitive lap was a 1m57.108s which put him provisionally fifth as Lando Norris set the pace for Josef Kaufmann Racing.

The Southwater racer soon improved once more and improved his personal best time to a 1m56.591s, which closed the gap to the provisional pole-sitter to just 0.455s. Times continued to tumble however and Will was shuffled back in the order. The 2015 BRDC Formula 4 Champion regrouped however and improved slightly to a 1m56.513s which put him sixth in his group as time continued to tick down. On his final lap of the session, the BRDC SuperStar shaved one hundredth of a second of his personal best to end with a quickest lap of 1m56.504s, which left him eighth in Group A as the chequered flag flew.

Lando Norris had set the pace in Group A with a 1m55.577s, but Will's R-ace GP ART Junior Max Defourny bested that in Group B with a 1m55.159s to secure pole position for the opening race of the 2016 season.

Race one gets underway in Spain at 12:00 BST with lights out to start race two at 17:35. Another qualifying session takes place tomorrow (Sunday) at 08:00 which sets the order for the third and final race of the weekend, which starts at 11:25.
