Will storms to sixth in race two at Motorland Aragon

A sterling drive from Will Palmer saw him charge through the field from 11th on the grid to take a sixth-place finish in the second Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 race of the weekend at Motorland Aragon in Spain. The R-ace GP driver had all his overtaking abilities on show as he battled past a number of competitors before securing sixth place, and a second-placed rookie finish, on the very last lap.

Owing to his second fastest lap during qualifying, the 19-year-old lined up on the sixth row of the grid and the 2015 BRDC Formula 4 Champion made a great start as the lights went out to move up two positions through the first few corners, and he found himself in ninth. That soon became eighth as he continued his rise up the order and he would come across the line at the end of the closing lap in that position, the fourth-highest rookie driver.

Will had a gap of just over three seconds to Josef Kaufmann Racing's Jehan Daruvala ahead, whilst he ably defended from Ferdinand Habsburg behind. Daruvala's advantage would be wiped out however as incident between the Fortec Motorsports pair of Troitskiy and Romanov, who clashed at the hairpin, brought out the safety car.

When racing resumed, Will made a good restart to hold eighth and was soon crawling all over the back of Daruvala as he looked for a way into seventh. The Indian driver defended strongly but Will would soon gain a position as Tech 1 Racing's Gabriel Aubry ran wide as spots of rain began to appear.

At the end of lap nine, Will was the third-highest rookie and he soon turned that into the second-highest place rookie as he slid down the inside of Robert Shwartzman into the hairpin on lap 11. As the race headed into its closing stages, Will's laptimes were extremely consistent but he found himself under pressure from Shwartzman heading on to the final lap. The Russian driver briefly found his way past but Will battled back superbly to secure sixth place as he crossed the line and take to the rookie podium in second place.

One more race remains in the opening Eurocup weekend of 2016, with qualifying for race three beginning at 08:00 BST with the race getting underway at 11:25.
