Strong weekend for Palmer at Rockingham

Will Palmer produced two mature drives to take a ninth and a tenth place finish at Rockingham last weekend.

Before qualifying, Will had had just fifteen minutes practice on the damp track, so was up against it compared to his rivals, most of whom had had two days of testing prior to the event.

Palmer then put in a very respectable performance to qualify in the pack in eleventh place for both races, with his fastest lap coming on his very last lap of the session.

In race one, Palmer made a good start, and held position before being pushed out while attempting to pass Oli Basey-Fisher for tenth. This meant Elliot Paterson was able to find a way past, with Tom Jackson following him through, meaning Will was shuffled down to thirteenth.

He then started his recovery, first passing Jackson with a well executed switch back out of Tarzan hairpin, before bravely lunging past Paterson into the first hairpin.

He then quickly caught up to the two cars ahead of Basey-Fisher and Freddie Lee, passing Basey-Fisher straight away with a tidy outbraking manoeuvre into Tarzan hairpin.

Trying to get past Freddie Lee however, Palmer had a slide out of the crucial final corner, allowing Basey-Fisher back past, and despite plenty of side by side, wheel to wheel racing, Will was unable to pass him, meaning he finished tenth.

In race two, Palmer had a solid getaway from the line, but had a fast-starting Jackson on his inside, prompting him to brake very late around the outside into the first hairpin, meaning he regained the position. Watson and Donegan also made mistakes at the hairpin, meaning Will was now into ninth place.

Will then had a go at Tarzan hairpin on Freddie Lee, but Lee was able to hold it around the outside. This left Palmer on the outside for the chicane, meaning Dongan got alongside him into the last corner, but a well timed switch back redeemed his ninth place.

He then had another go on Lee at the first hairpin, but was forced into him while also on the outside of Basey-Fisher, meaning Lee was spun out of the way, moving Will up to eighth place. The next lap round Will put in a very confident lunge on Basey-Fisher at the first hairpin to take seventh, putting him onto the back of Harry Woodhead.

He then made several efforts to pass Woodhead, the last of which unfortunately ended in Basey-Fisher and Lee going around his outside, meaning he finished a pleasing ninth.

Speaking after the weekend, Will said "I really enjoyed this weekend; obviously it was a bit of a struggle with the lack of testing, but I'm really happy with how we did, especially the pace in the races. What prevented better results in the end was qualifying below where our pace in the races would have put us, as I was still getting to grips with the track. I had lots of really enjoyable scraps though, and I can't wait till Silverstone on the sixth of October."
