Will Palmer Q&A

Will Palmer is the latest driver to sign up to the 2014 BRDC F4 Championship, after agreeing a deal to race in the series with the HHC Motorsport team, continuing a relationship with the Harrogate-based squad which dates back to 2012. Here are his thoughts on his step up to single seaters in 2014, and how he expects to fare in his first full season in the championship:

How did you find the transition to F4 from Ginetta Juniors?

"Easier than I expected. There are some differences in the way you have to drive the two cars to get the best laptimes, as the Ginetta had very little power and was on road tyres, which is quite a contrast to the F4 car with slicks and wings! However I think the key thing that you learn with experience in any car is being able to feel and understand what it is doing and why, and when you understand the car you have the confidence to push it hard and that is when you will always be at your quickest."

Was the F4 car a big step up in performance?

"Definitely. My first test was at Snetterton, and started wet so the conditions weren't ideal for my first test in the car! It dried up later that day though and I can remember being blown away by the amount of grip the car had on slicks compared to what I was used to in the Ginetta. Of course, having around double the power of the Ginetta meant it certainly felt quick on the straights as well!"

What took the most getting used to with the F4 car?

"Probably left foot braking and having the downforce to be able to push harder through the faster corners, but I got used to it all quite quickly."

What are your expectations for 2014?

"I had a strong winter series taking a pole and a win, so I'd love to take a win or two and finish in the top six overall in my first season of single seaters."

What are you doing at school? How hard is it to fit racing in with school work?

"I'm in my first year of A-levels now doing Physics, Maths and French. It is normally not a problem fitting racing in with school work, but I did get quite lucky last year with no GCSE exams and races near each other, so hopefully I will have a similar situation this year!"

How much help with driving do you get from your brother Jolyon?

"I think he has been a great help for me; he has a lot of experience and success in single seaters, and when he is not racing himself he will always come up to my races to give me some coaching which is always really helpful."

Do you feel much pressure from having a successful dad and brother in motor racing?

"It's a question I'm often asked, but to be honest I never really think about that sort of thing when I'm at the track or in the car. I really like having both of them around as they will always try to help and give me some advice, which I probably don't listen to as often as I should given their racing experience!"

How much are you looking forward to racing on legendary full length circuits like Brands Hatch GP and Silverstone GP?

"Brands Hatch GP is my favourite track that I have driven, so I really can't wait to drive it in a single seater! I have never driven the full Grand Prix circuit at Silverstone, so that is probably the track I'm looking forward to driving the most, especially with it being such a classic and historical circuit."
